Description:

Amanda was introduced to patents in 1992 when working at Derwent publications on the WPI database and
providing input into searching strategies. She then joined the patent department of UK biotechnology company Protherics Limited (now BTG), which specialised in rational drug design and peptide vaccine technology. She worked as a patent attorney in UK patent attorney firms for 10 years before moving to Australia in 2003, becoming a partner at Griffith Hack in 2005. She has extensive experience in all patent matters related to the capture, prosecution and defence of patents, particularly in Australia, Europe and US. Amanda has been involved in many oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office and in Australia. She has extensive experience in advising on and obtaining extensions of patent term in Europe and Australia. She is involved in our AgBio group and is also responsible for our PBR team.
Whilst Amanda works exclusively in the biotechnology field, she is capable of understanding pharmaceutical
chemistry and works closely with the chemical specialists in the group when needed. Amanda shares her time
between managing the patent portfolios of overseas clients, including two of the world’s largest biotech companies and providing tailored strategic advice and expertise to local clients in the biotech sector. Her industrial experience helps to provide a commercial focus and she is often called on to provide due diligence, IPO and licensing advice. Amanda also trains and mentors junior biotech attorneys.

Amanda has particular experience in human and animal health, especially in vaccine technology, including
adjuvants, peptide vaccines, for example for HIV and tuberculosis, viral vaccines, for example for influenza,
vaccine delivery and carrier systems, having drafted and prosecuted patents in these areas and provided freedom
to operate opinions for particular vaccine products. She has also drafted and prosecuted patents in several areas
of human health, including stem cell technology and cellular reprogramming; cardiology; women’s health,
particularly in relation to cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, infertility, pregnancy, menopause, contraception, antiaging treatments and weight control; osteoporosis; diabetes and metabolic syndrome; inflammatory diseases; cancer; anti-infectives, especially anti-virals; immune suppressants; nutrition, especially infant formulas, neutraceuticals and nutrigenomics; and neurology, particularly in relation to dementia. Amanda also has substantial experience in medical devices, pesticides and herbicides and plant molecular biology.
