John has many years experience dealing with all aspects of intellectual property law.
In addition to being a lawyer, John is a registered patent attorney and has a very thorough understanding of the fundamentals of patent law which he has used to conduct patent litigation relating to a wide range of technologies including biotechnology, resources, IT, business methods and manufacturing.
John also has extensive experience in undertaking trade mark enforcement and litigation in respect of brands in the entertainment, financial services and FMCG fields.
John also has considerable experience in the commercialisation of IP assets including assisting clients in establishing and implementing IP strategies to identify, capture and leverage their IP including structuring, drafting and negotiating IP licensing and commercialisation arrangements.
Some recent matters John has worked on include:
- Co-ordinating a patent infringement regime for a European based multi-national in relation to a technology used in the resources sector.
- Running a suite of patent related litigation including infringement, unjustified threats and inventorship disputes for a major Australian infrastructure group in respect of a range of technologies used in the resources industry.
- Negotiating and drafting licences and commercialisation arrangements for one of Australia’s leading ICT companies.
- Seeking and obtaining urgent interlocutory relief for a global brand owner in respect of trade mark infringement in Australia.
- Negotiating, structuring and documenting an AU$20 million disposal and licence back of a suite of brands for a global infrastructure company.
John is a guest lecturer on IP at the University of Sydney and regularly presents at conferences as well as contributing articles and commentary to both legal and mainstream business publications. John has been interviewed in leading business publications and given TV interviews on recent IP issues and their impact on businesses.
