Some recent matters Nicholas has worked on include:
- Enforcing intellectual property rights in one of the most successful US television series
- Negotiating the commercialisation of intellectual property for a clean technology start-up company
- Protecting and enforcing patent rights associated with lottery gaming technology
- Advising on the optimal protection of inventions, the commercial value of which lies within the supply of
easily manufacturable, disposable parts
- Enforcing the copyright and trade mark rights associated with an artistic director’s band and musical works
- Recovering domain name registrations from cyber-squatters

Nicholas has a background in information technology, having completed honours degrees in computer
science and law while gaining industry experience in developing and implementing IT solutions for AustLII,
the most widely used legal database in Australasia. Nicholas subsequently worked for two years at Allens
Arthur Robinson in the intellectual property practice group and in the communications, media and technology
practice group, managing intellectual property litigation and commercialisation throughout.
Nicholas has acted for major companies at the forefront of their respective industries, as well as for medium
and small businesses, start-up companies, inventors, designers, artists and not for profit organisations,
protecting and enforcing the full gamut of their intellectual property rights.
Nicholas has authored several publications, including an article published in 2009 on the aggressive and
defensive uses of search engine marketing and a chapter on the protection of intellectual property in a book
published in Melbourne in 2008 entitled ‘Essays in Sport and the Law’. Nicholas has particular expertise in
the law of contributory infringement of patents.
