As a key member of one of Australia’s largest Life Sciences and Chemical patent attorney group, Janelle has significant industry experience which benefits clients predominately in the chemical field. A majority of her
time is spent drafting patent applications for local clients, conducting patent prior art searches, conducting infringement clearance searches, advising on freedom to operate, and working on patent oppositions
(including evidence preparation and oral proceedings). Janelle also works for large international clients, providing strategic advice, patent drafting services, patent opposition services and monitoring of competitor patent portfolios, amongst other things, to assist in-house attorneys located in the USA and UK.
Janelle has considerable experience with organising and running patent due diligence searches for clients taking over third party international patent portfolios, and for clients considering commencing research in new
technical fields.
Janelle has been heavily involved in the training of young attorneys by lecturing on both Australian and European patent protection at Victoria’s universities and for the Intellectual Property Training Academy. Janelle is also a Councillor of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys.
Janelle’s technology background is in organic and general chemistry, with specific experience in food chemistry, minerals extraction, nanoparticle technology, ionic liquids, polymers (including conductive polymers and organic photovoltaics), energy storage solutions, and new pharmaceutical compounds. She has undertaken further studies in new technology areas, and is currently completing studies in food technology, including confectionery manufacturing. Janelle’s major clients include international food/beverage companies, pharmaceutical companies, Australian start-up companies, and Australian research institutes and universities. Since joining Griffith Hack, Janelle has further developed her knowledge of European patent practices by working as a patent attorney for two years in the UK. In the UK Janelle worked for clients in the fields of sugar chemistry, organic photovoltaics and pharmaceuticals, amongst others.
