"Every business has different IP needs"

“Every business has a different level of understanding of the IP system, and different specific needs, so advice needs to be carefully tailored to each client’s individual requirements.” Janelle’s work involves everything from drafting patent specifications to providing strategic IP advice to large corporations locally and overseas. She works closely with Griffith Hack’s IP Law team on patent oppositions and patent litigation before the Federal Court. 

Food science is a particular area of expertise, working with multinationals in an area that has changed significantly over the last 20 years. “The industry used to focus on the protection of brands. Now food manufacturers are realising that new products and processes that overcome the problems of existing foods and processes are protectable by patents.”  While this is an area of special interest for Janelle, she is equally stimulated by her work in the areas of pharmaceuticals, energy technology and polymers, amongst others.
