"It's essential to understand a client's objectives so you can provide commercially viable strategic advice"

It was working as a personal assistant at Griffith Hack that ignited Rosie’s passion for IP. Fast forward twenty years and Rosie has carved a career as a Principal of the Life Sciences & Chemical Group, preparing specifications, prosecuting local and foreign applications, handling oppositions and providing patent landscaping, infringement and validity advice.

Rosie works predominantly in the pharmaceuticals space helping pharmaceutical and biotech companies locally and internationally manage their patent portfolios. She has particular expertise with patent term extensions and regularly assists clients in extending pharmaceutical monopolies. She recognises that, for innovators, developing a product for the market can be a long and involved process. For generic companies, it’s about understanding the patent protection provided by Australian patents compared to other jurisdictions.

As well as providing advice for patents filed in Australia and New Zealand, Rosie has a particular interest in the pharmaceutical industry in India. “India is now considered one of the top pharmaceutical markets in the world. This may have been because, until relatively recently, the Indian patent system only allowed process patents. With the introduction of legislation in 2005 that re-instated product patents, it is more competitive. However, there are still efforts being made to prevent the ‘evergreening’ of patents and keeping drug prices affordable in this country.”
