SoundCloud has reportedly removed a silent track for infringing on copyright.
The music-hosting service, SoundCloud, has recently made headlines by purportedly removing a DJ Detweiler’s remix of John Cage’s 4’33 for copyright infringement. 4’33 consists of 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence.
According to recent reports the actual the basis for the removal of the song was due to its inclusion of Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean” without the right holder’s permission.
D.J. Detweiler now claims that its real motivation for uploading the remix with the title “4’33” was to get people thinking about copyright. One member of the group asked “What can you not copyright at this point? Can you copyright a heartbeat?”.
