Applications from US-based filers have acted as a source of stable business for patent firms in Australia for many years, but the last few years’ worth of data show a fascinating shift.
In a recent Article published to Managing IP, Aaron Le Poidevin, Griffith Hack’s Managing Director shared his thoughts on these trends.
“Chinese companies are increasingly technologically advanced and global in outlook, and Australia is an attractive jurisdiction.” He says.
“From a firm perspective, the key is being positioned for cross-border work in both directions. We have invested in capabilities that support Chinese clients filing into Australia, while also supporting Australian companies protecting their IP in China.
“That includes language capability, cultural fluency and strong relationships with leading firms in China. Increasingly, we are also seeing Chinese companies more willing to enforce rights internationally, which points to potential growth in contentious work.”
While the US remains one of the world’s most innovative economies, Aaron also notes that US filers are adopting tighter capital discipline, portfolio rationalisation, and sector-specific corrections post-COVID.
However, he adds: “Importantly, we’re still seeing strong activity from certain US clients and technology sectors such as biotech, electrical/ICT and mechanical engineering.”
